Description
A vintage Danish movie poster of ''Ulysses'', a 1954 film directed by Mario Camerini, and it is an Italian-American production based on the epic poem "The Odyssey" by the ancient Greek poet Homer. The film is known by various titles, including "Ulysses," "Ulisse" (its Italian title), and "Adventures of Ulysses" in some regions.
The movie tells the legendary story of Odysseus (Ulysses in Latin), a Greek hero who embarks on a long and perilous journey to return home to Ithaca after the Trojan War. The film stars Kirk Douglas as Ulysses, Silvana Mangano as Penelope (his wife), and Anthony Quinn as Antinous, one of Penelope's suitors.
"Ulysses" follows the hero's adventures and trials as he encounters various mythical creatures, gods, and challenges on his way back to his homeland. These adventures include encounters with the Cyclops Polyphemus, the enchantress Circe, the sirens, and the treacherous sea monsters Scylla and Charybdis, among others.
The film combines elements of mythology, fantasy, and adventure, bringing to life the timeless tale of Odysseus' struggle to reunite with his family and reclaim his kingdom. It's a classic example of the sword-and-sandal genre popular in the 1950s, which often featured epic historical or mythological stories.
"Ulysses" is notable for its colorful production design, special effects for its time, and Kirk Douglas's charismatic performance in the lead role. It is considered a classic adaptation of "The Odyssey" and has been enjoyed by audiences for its depiction of a hero's journey filled with action, drama, and mythical wonders.
About the artist:
Benny Stilling was a Danish poster designer whose career spans from the 1940s through the 1960s. He had an extremely recognizable style, strongly linked to advertising and reminiscent of vintage advertising of the period. Over the three decades of his production, his style became more personal and modern.
Stilling's posters are characterized by highly marked black outlines and solid graphic elements. Figures of the actors are clearly detached from the backgrounds of their posters. While his choice of pastel background colors, such as powder blues, light greens, and pinks, is also a particular feature in much of his work. The modernity of Stilling's style became most apparent in the 1960s.
