Description
Digital painting of actor Kirk Douglas (1916-2020). Douglas was an American actor, producer, director, and writer, who has acted in over 90 films during his career. From an impoverished childhood, he made his film debut in "The Strange Love of Martha Ivers" (1946) with Barbara Stanwyck.
By 1949 he had become a major star after his convincing performance as an unscrupulous boxer in "Champion." It was the type of role he was to portray best and most often in ensuing films—cocky, intense, forceful, and egocentric. Throughout the 1950s, he was known for acting in serious dramas of all genres.
He was nominated three times for Academy Awards for "Champion" (1949), "The Bad and the Beautiful" (1952), and "Lust for Life" (1956). He won the New York Critics Award as best actor for his powerful portrayal of Vincent Van Gogh in the latter.
In 1960, Douglas played the title role in Spartacus with an all-star cast in "Spartacus" (1960), directed by Stanley Kubrick.
When he died in 2020 at age 103, he was one of the last surviving stars of Hollywood's Golden Age. He is the father of actor-producer Michael Douglas.
