Description
A vintage Danish movie poster of ''Girl Happy'', a musical comedy film released in 1965. It was directed by Boris Sagal and produced by Joe Pasternak. The film stars Elvis Presley, Shelley Fabares, Harold J. Stone, and Gary Crosby in lead roles.
The story revolves around a rock singer named Rusty Wells, played by Elvis Presley, and his band. Rusty and his bandmates are hired by a Chicago mobster named Big Frank to go to Fort Lauderdale, Florida, during spring break to keep an eye on his daughter, Valerie, portrayed by Shelley Fabares. Big Frank is worried that Valerie will get into trouble during her vacation, so he assigns Rusty and his band the task of ensuring she stays out of trouble.
Of course, complications arise as Rusty and his band try to keep Valerie out of mischief while dealing with their own romantic entanglements and encounters with a group of college guys who are also interested in Valerie. The film is filled with musical performances by Elvis Presley, including songs like "Puppet on a String," "Do the Clam," and "Puppet on a String."
"Girl Happy" is a lighthearted and entertaining film that captures the spirit of the 1960s with its music, fashion, and beachside setting. It combines elements of comedy, romance, and musical performances, making it a typical Elvis Presley movie of the era. While not considered one of Presley's most memorable films, it remains a favorite among fans of his work and provides a glimpse into the popular culture of the time.
About the artist:
Benny Stilling was a Danish poster designer whose career spans from the 1940s through the 1960s. He had an extremely recognizable style, strongly linked to advertising and reminiscent of vintage advertising of the period. Over the three decades of his production, his style became more personal and modern.
Stilling's posters are characterized by highly marked black outlines and solid graphic elements. Figures of the actors are clearly detached from the backgrounds of their posters. While his choice of pastel background colors, such as powder blues, light greens, and pinks, is also a particular feature in much of his work. The modernity of Stilling's style became most apparent in the 1960s.
