Description
Publicity photo of Wallace Beery. His story is one of perseverance, versatility, and the indomitable spirit of a true actor.
Wallace Fitzgerald Beery was born on April 1, 1885, in the small town of Clay County, Missouri. His early years were far from glamorous, marked by poverty and a troubled family life. But like a diamond in the rough, Beery's innate talent shone through.
In his youth, Beery worked in various odd jobs, from ditch digger to circus performer, honing his skills and toughening his resolve. His break came in the form of vaudeville, where his robust personality and comedic timing won over audiences. It was clear that this man was destined for the stage and screen.
The silver screen beckoned, and Beery answered its call. In the early days of silent cinema, he appeared in a series of silent films, often cast as a villain due to his distinctive, imposing presence. But it was with the advent of sound that Beery truly found his niche. His deep, gravelly voice became iconic, earning him roles in numerous talkies.
Perhaps his most memorable role was as the lovable, rough-around-the-edges boxer Long John in "The Champ," a role that would win him an Academy Award in 1932. Beery's ability to evoke genuine emotion endeared him to audiences, and he continued to captivate them with roles in films like "Dinner at Eight" and "Treasure Island."
Off-screen, Beery was known for his generosity and his love for animals, especially his pet lion, Jackie, who even shared the screen with him in several films. He was a man of contradictions, gruff on the exterior but with a heart as big as the silver screen itself.
Wallace Beery left an indelible mark on Hollywood, a testament to the power of perseverance and the enduring appeal of a true character actor. His legacy lives on, reminding us all that behind every memorable role is a story of determination, talent, and the spirit of the silver screen.
About the artist:
Sergio Gargiulo was an Italian painter and poster artist. In the 1930s he was commissioned by MGM to do publicity portraits of some of its leading stars.
Gargiulo's art has an extremely personal and recognizable style. The focus of the designer, in fact, falls precisely on faces: there is no setting or scenery; gazes and facial expressions are enough to connote the story. The focus of this artist is on portraits and the plot becomes secondary, preferring a simple and minimal graphic composition.
In this stylistic choice, Gargiulo favors clean, graphic lines and the use of iridescent and bright colors to create luminous effects on the face. The movie stars occupy the space entirely, carving out a space in fanciful spots, clouds, or squares. In some cases, Gargiulo chooses interesting monochrome shades of gray or shades of bronze, giving the characters the noble status of sculpture. Gargiulo's artworks are sculptural portraits.
