Description
A vintage Italian movie poster of ''The Story of Ruth'', a 1960 American biblical drama film directed by Henry Koster. The film is an adaptation of the biblical Book of Ruth from the Old Testament and is known for its faithful retelling of the story within a historical and dramatic context.
The film's narrative is centered around Ruth, portrayed by Elana Eden, a young Moabite woman who becomes a widow and chooses to accompany her mother-in-law, Naomi, played by Peggy Wood, back to Naomi's homeland of Bethlehem. In Bethlehem, Ruth's devotion and loyalty to Naomi, as well as her unwavering faith in God, lead her to become an integral part of the community.
The story of Ruth unfolds against the backdrop of ancient Israel and its customs. Ruth's dedication to her faith and her commitment to her family's legacy are central themes of the film. Her life takes a turn when she meets and falls in love with Boaz, portrayed by Stuart Whitman, a wealthy landowner who shows kindness and compassion toward her.
"The Story of Ruth" is celebrated for its production design and period accuracy, offering viewers a glimpse into the historical setting and customs of biblical times. The film's script remains faithful to the biblical account, emphasizing themes of faith, loyalty, and love.
Elana Eden delivers a heartfelt performance as Ruth, capturing the character's determination and inner strength. The chemistry between her and Stuart Whitman as Boaz adds depth to the film's romantic elements.
While "The Story of Ruth" may not be as well-known as some other biblical epics of its era, it remains a respectful and moving adaptation of the biblical story, presenting a narrative that has been cherished for generations. The film's faith-based themes and historical context make it an enduring and meaningful cinematic representation of the biblical Book of Ruth.
About the artist:
Dante Manno (1911-1996), born in Rome on September 17, 1911, was an Italian illustrator, painter, and designer of prominent film posters. In Rome, he studied art under Duilio Cambellotti (1876-1960), a noted graphic Art Nouveau artist.
What is striking about Manno’s posters is the imposing presence of reality. He portrays the movie stars by paying incredible attention to their volumes, to the tonal research of colors to create relief, to the areas of light and shadow. The result is extremely three-dimensional, modeled, plastic designs. Manno works on light and on the thickening of the contour line, giving depth to his figures skillfully placed in space. As a result, he creates bodies that seem real and dynamic.
Among his better-known posters was one for the Italian film "Riso Amaro" (1949), aka "Bitter Rice," a neorealist movie by Lux Film. After producing Italian and American movie posters from the 1930s through the 1950s, primarily for Lux Film, he shifted his focus away from posters in the early 1960s and devoted himself exclusively to easel painting.
Manno donated his works to the University of Parma in Italy.
