Description
A vintage movie poster reprint of ''The Scarlet Pimpernel'', a 1934 British-American adventure film directed by Harold Young and starring Leslie Howard and Merle Oberon. The film is based on the classic 1905 novel "The Scarlet Pimpernel" by Baroness Emma Orczy and is set against the backdrop of the French Revolution. It combines elements of romance, intrigue, and swashbuckling adventure.
Here are some key elements of the film:
Sir Percy Blakeney (Leslie Howard): Leslie Howard portrays the dual role of Sir Percy Blakeney, a seemingly foppish and frivolous English aristocrat, and the mysterious Scarlet Pimpernel. As Sir Percy, he maintains a facade of an ineffectual dandy to hide his true identity as a daring and resourceful hero who leads a secret group of Englishmen rescuing French aristocrats from the guillotine during the Reign of Terror.
Marguerite St. Just (Merle Oberon): Merle Oberon plays Marguerite St. Just, a French actress who is married to Sir Percy Blakeney. Marguerite is initially unaware of her husband's secret life as the Scarlet Pimpernel and is frustrated by his perceived indifference. Her involvement in the plot thickens as she becomes a key player in the story.
The Reign of Terror: The film is set during the tumultuous period of the French Revolution, characterized by chaos, political upheaval, and the indiscriminate use of the guillotine. The Scarlet Pimpernel's daring rescue missions aim to save French aristocrats from the deadly clutches of the revolutionaries.
Swashbuckling Adventure: "The Scarlet Pimpernel" features action-packed sequences, including swordfights, daring escapes, and secret rendezvous. Leslie Howard's portrayal of the Scarlet Pimpernel is marked by wit, charm, and bravery as he outwits his enemies and leads daring rescues.
Romantic Tensions: The film also explores the romantic tension between Sir Percy and Marguerite, as she becomes increasingly conflicted about her husband's mysterious activities. Their relationship is central to the emotional core of the story.
"The Scarlet Pimpernel" is considered a classic of the adventure genre and has been adapted into various films, television series, and stage productions over the years. Leslie Howard's performance as the dual character of Sir Percy and the Scarlet Pimpernel is a standout, and the film captures the intrigue and danger of the French Revolution era. It remains a beloved and enduring tale of heroism, sacrifice, and romance in a time of political turmoil.
About the artist:
Gösta Åberg (Sept. 6, 1905, Stockholm - April 9, 1981) was a Swedish painter, cartoonist, sculptor, and advertising artist. Between 1935 and 1965, Åberg designed posters for thousands of films, which are now part of the Film History collections at the Technical Museum in Stockholm.
Aberg creates incredibly modern conceptual graphic artworks. The faces of the movie stars are no longer the main protagonists of the composition, but often objects or distinctive scenes. The style is linear, geometric, essential.
Aberg creates extremely symbolic compositions, consisting of evocative elements but delineated in a precise manner. His works are characterized by simplicity and stylization. The objects are made uniform and simplified, giving the viewer a feeling of order and comprehensibility. Aberg is a refined interpreter of the world of cinema, which tends to make complex worlds immediate and clear.
