Description
A vintage movie poster from Spain of ''The Quiet Man'', a classic American romantic comedy-drama film directed by John Ford and released in 1952. The movie is set in the picturesque countryside of Ireland and stars John Wayne as the protagonist, Sean Thornton, and Maureen O'Hara as the leading lady, Mary Kate Danaher. The film is known for its stunning cinematography that showcases the lush landscapes of rural Ireland.
The story revolves around Sean Thornton, an Irish-American boxer who returns to his ancestral homeland of Inisfree in Ireland after a tragic incident in the United States. He intends to live a peaceful life and purchase his family's old cottage, which is now owned by Mary Kate's bullying brother, Will Danaher. Sean is attracted to Mary Kate from the moment he lays eyes on her, and despite the disapproval of her brother, they eventually fall in love.
However, Sean and Mary Kate's budding romance faces several challenges, including the strict and traditional Irish customs and the antagonism of Will Danaher. The film's central conflict revolves around Sean's efforts to win Mary Kate's hand in marriage while navigating the complexities of local customs and dealing with her overprotective brother.
"The Quiet Man" is celebrated for its charming and heartwarming portrayal of love and courtship in an idyllic Irish setting. It also features memorable supporting characters, including Michaeleen Oge Flynn (played by Barry Fitzgerald) as the town's matchmaker, who provides comic relief throughout the film.
One of the film's most iconic moments is a spectacular and epic fistfight between Sean and Will, which takes place in the middle of the village and becomes a symbol of male pride and reconciliation in the story. The film also explores themes of cultural identity, tradition, and the clash between old-world customs and modern values.
"The Quiet Man" was a critical and commercial success upon its release and won two Academy Awards, including one for Best Director for John Ford. It has since become a beloved classic and is considered one of the greatest films in cinematic history, known for its beautiful cinematography, memorable performances, and timeless portrayal of love and Irish culture.
About the artist:
Jose Montalban (Nov. 3,1925 - Oct. 28, 2020) was a painter, draftsman, and prolific Spanish film poster artist who painted hundreds of posters for major international films.
Montalban navigates through different styles, creating a kaleidoscope of settings and characters with mixed moods. The result is a varied corpus of works that communicates the richness and dynamism of the whole world of cinema. Some posters have truthful traits, while others are sketched and impressionistic. He creates animated-like scenes while others include expressionistic and disturbing atmospheres from their geometric essence. Montalban's talent is in masterfully adapting his style, which fits like a glove with the selected motion picture.
He was born in Alcocer, Guadalajara, Spain, in 1925. As a child, he displayed a natural talent for the arts, which led to a self-taught career as a professional artist. In the 1950s, he collaborated with painter and graphic artist Jano, from whom he learned how to design dynamic film posters. As a result, he became highly skilled at producing art with careful composition, perspective, colorization, and lettering.
Montalbán worked for various film distributors, including Procines, Bengala Films, Castilla Films, and Pelimex. His posters were noted by author Ignacio Michelena Usatorre in his book, Film Posters: 100 Spanish designers.
During his career, Montalbán also worked as an animator at Estudios Moro and collaborated as a cartoonist in publications such as ABC, Blanco y Negro, Triunfo and Selecciones del Reader’s Digest.
He remained an active artist until his final years, painting and exhibiting in numerous Spanish cities. Over 240 of his posters are preserved at the Spanish Film Library in Madrid.
