The island is home to a volcanic mountain, Mount Durand, which is on the verge of erupting. When a fire breaks out at the island's prison, three dangerous criminals, led by Harry (Frank Sinatra), escape and seek refuge on the island.

Meanwhile, a group of young children is stranded on the other side of the island, cut off from the mission and in grave danger due to the impending volcanic eruption. Father Perreau, along with Harry and the other escapees, reluctantly agrees...
