Description
A vintage German movie poster of ''Singin in the Rain'', a classic musical film released in 1952, directed by Stanley Donen and Gene Kelly, who also starred in the movie. The film is known for its joyful and iconic musical sequences, as well as its exploration of the transition from silent films to talkies in Hollywood during the late 1920s. Here's a description of the movie:
Plot Summary:
The film is set in Hollywood during the late 1920s, a time when silent films were the norm in the motion picture industry. Don Lockwood, played by Gene Kelly, and Lina Lamont, played by Jean Hagen, are two popular silent film stars known for their on-screen romantic pairings. However, off-screen, Don cannot stand Lina due to her conceited and obnoxious personality.
As Hollywood transitions to making sound films (talkies), Don and his best friend Cosmo Brown, played by Donald O'Connor, face the challenge of adapting to the new technology. They quickly realize that Lina's voice is grating and unsuitable for talking pictures. To solve this problem, they decide to dub her voice with that of Kathy Selden, portrayed by Debbie Reynolds, a talented young actress with a beautiful singing voice. However, Lina is unaware of this dubbing arrangement and believes her voice is the one audiences are hearing.
The film unfolds as Don and Kathy's budding romance faces obstacles, Lina's vocal limitations become increasingly evident, and the production of their first talkie film, "The Dueling Cavalier," encounters numerous comedic mishaps. The highlight of the film is the iconic and joyous musical number "Singin' in the Rain," where Gene Kelly dances and sings in the rain, expressing his happiness in the midst of adversity.
"Singin' in the Rain" is not only celebrated for its memorable musical sequences but also for its humorous and satirical portrayal of the film industry's transition to sound. It offers a behind-the-scenes look at the challenges faced by actors, directors, and technicians during this transformative period.
The film's cast delivers exceptional performances, with Gene Kelly's charismatic dancing, Donald O'Connor's comedic talents, and Debbie Reynolds' charm and singing voice standing out. The chemistry between the characters and the energy of the musical numbers contribute to the film's enduring appeal.
"Singin' in the Rain" has become a beloved classic of American cinema and is often regarded as one of the greatest musicals ever made. Its joyful and timeless songs, including the titular "Singin' in the Rain," have made it a staple of musical theater and film history.
About the artist:
Georg Schubert (1911-2005), born in Rosenheim, was a German painter and graphic artist. He studied at the Munich Art Academy, followed by the Academy of Fine Arts in Berlin. His style became representative of the Munich School. He quickly moved up the ranks by winning poster competitions and befriending and working with artist Heinz Schulz-Neudamm on film advertising.
In a unique glance, Schubert captures perhaps the most fascinating aspect of cinema: magic. Like those captured by the movie camera, the worlds he creates in his movie posters are sparkling and dreamy. The cold and pastel chromatic tones give the entire atmosphere a romantic and delicate allure. The use of a particular shade of blue tending to indigo makes his background almost crystal clear. Created with touches of color particularly focused on the bright use of white, his characters shine as if under the spotlight.
His lengthy career brought him notable success: he was awarded a gold medal at an international art exhibition in Paris and received other badges of honor. Many of his original poster designs are on display at the German Film Museum in Frankfurt.
From 1950 to 1975, he lived in Wiesbaden, where he took part in the annual exhibitions of the Künstlerbund in the fountain colonnade, the Biebrich Castle, and the Villa Clementine in the house of the Hessian state government. He was also a member of the Munich Artists' Cooperative. Schubert's works have been exhibited in Bonn, Paris, Strasbourg, Baden-Baden and San Francisco.
In addition to his notable work on film posters and cinema graphics, he became a recognized landscape painter and portraitist.
