Description
"Ohm Kruger" is a 1941 American historical war film directed by Hans Steinhoff and produced by Lothar Wolff. The film is notable for its portrayal of Paul Kruger, a prominent figure in South African history and a leader of the Boers during the Second Anglo-Boer War (1899-1902). The character of Paul Kruger is played by Emil Jannings.
The film primarily focuses on the events leading up to and during the Second Anglo-Boer War, which was a conflict between the British Empire and the Boer states in South Africa, namely the South African Republic and the Orange Free State. Paul Kruger is depicted as a strong and determined leader who resists British imperial ambitions in South Africa. The film portrays his efforts to defend the Boer republics' independence and the challenges he faces in the face of British military superiority.
"Ohm Kruger" is a historically significant film as it explores the Boer perspective of the war, which is often overlooked in mainstream historical accounts. It provides a portrayal of the Boer leader as a symbol of resistance against British imperialism, and the film's narrative reflects the Boer viewpoint of the conflict.
It's worth noting that the film was made during a time when World War II was ongoing, and there was a desire to generate support and sympathy for the British war effort. As a result, "Ohm Kruger" was intended, in part, as a piece of wartime propaganda, portraying the British as defenders of justice and liberty against oppressive forces. Nonetheless, the film remains a valuable historical artifact for its portrayal of the Second Anglo-Boer War and its depiction of Paul Kruger's role in it.
About the poster artist:
Sergio Gargiulo was an Italian painter and poster artist. In the 1930s he was commissioned by MGM to do publicity portraits of some of its leading stars.
Gargiulo's art has an extremely personal and recognizable style. The focus of the designer, in fact, falls precisely on faces: there is no setting or scenery; gazes and facial expressions are enough to connote the story. The focus of this artist is on portraits and the plot becomes secondary, preferring a simple and minimal graphic composition.
In this stylistic choice, Gargiulo favors clean, graphic lines and the use of iridescent and bright colors to create luminous effects on the face. The movie stars occupy the space entirely, carving out a space in fanciful spots, clouds, or squares. In some cases, Gargiulo chooses interesting monochrome shades of gray or shades of bronze, giving the characters the noble status of sculpture. Gargiulo's artworks are sculptural portraits.
