Description
Base painting of the vintage movie poster for ''Never the Twain Shall Meet'', a 1931 drama film featuring Leslie Howard in a significant role. Directed by W.S. Van Dyke, the film explores themes of cultural clashes, forbidden love, and the consequences of pursuing one's desires against societal norms.
The story centers on Dan Pritchard, played by Leslie Howard, an Englishman who has lived with a remote tribe in the South Seas for years. He has become deeply immersed in their culture and way of life. When a ship arrives, bringing a group of American traders, Dan is forced to return to civilization. He eventually ends up in San Francisco, where he finds it challenging to adapt to Western society and its customs after years spent living among the indigenous people.
The film takes a dramatic turn when Dan falls in love with Tamea (Conchita Montenegro), a beautiful South Seas native. This forbidden romance sets the stage for a series of conflicts and moral dilemmas as Dan struggles to reconcile his love for Tamea with the expectations and prejudices of society.
"Never the Twain Shall Meet" is notable for its exploration of cultural identity and the clash between Western and indigenous cultures. Leslie Howard delivers a compelling performance as a man torn between two worlds, torn by his desires and the societal pressures placed upon him.
While the film may not be as well-remembered today as some of Leslie Howard's other works, it is an interesting reflection of the era's fascination with exoticism and the exploration of unconventional romantic relationships. "Never the Twain Shall Meet" remains a notable entry in Leslie Howard's filmography and is a product of its time, offering a glimpse into the cultural attitudes of the early 1930s.
Base art is the poster artwork after the text has been digitally removed. It thereby closely recreates the original painting used for the poster. As practically all those original paintings have been lost, a recreation attempts to display the original art before the movie studios added descriptive text. About the artist:
Gösta Åberg (Sept. 6, 1905, Stockholm - April 9, 1981) was a Swedish painter, cartoonist, sculptor, and advertising artist. Between 1935 and 1965, Åberg designed posters for thousands of films, which are now part of the Film History collections at the Technical Museum in Stockholm.
Aberg creates incredibly modern conceptual graphic artworks. The faces of the movie stars are no longer the main protagonists of the composition, but often objects or distinctive scenes. The style is linear, geometric, essential.
Aberg creates extremely symbolic compositions, consisting of evocative elements but delineated in a precise manner. His works are characterized by simplicity and stylization. The objects are made uniform and simplified, giving the viewer a feeling of order and comprehensibility. Aberg is a refined interpreter of the world of cinema, which tends to make complex worlds immediate and clear.
