A vintage movie poster from Denmark of ''Mister Cory'', 1957, an American drama film directed by Blake Edwards and starring Tony Curtis in the title role. The film is set in the early 1950s and follows the story of Cory, a young and ambitious man from a poor background who rises to success in the world of high-stakes gambling.
Cory, played by Tony Curtis, begins as a busboy in a luxury hotel but quickly learns the intricacies of gambling. His intelligence, charm, and skill at card games help him climb the social ladder, as he aspires to wealth and status. Along his journey, Cory encounters various characters including wealthy patrons, love interests, and gambling rivals, each playing a role in his ascent and the challenges he faces.
"Mister Cory" is noted for its exploration of themes like the pursuit of the American Dream, social mobility, and the moral ambiguities of gambling and ambition. The film portrays the allure of wealth and the high society life, but also delves into the darker aspects of greed and deception.
Tony Curtis delivers a compelling performance as Cory, bringing depth to a character whose motivations are driven by both a desire to escape poverty and a hunger for acceptance in the elite circles of society. The film also features strong performances by its supporting cast, including Martha Hyer and Kathryn Grant, who play the women in Cory's life, each representing different aspects of his ambitions and desires.
Directed by Blake Edwards, known for his versatility and later famous for the "Pink Panther" series, "Mister Cory" showcases his early ability to handle drama and character-driven stories. The film's narrative structure and character development are well-crafted, drawing the audience into Cory's world and his psychological journey.
Visually, the film captures the glamour and sophistication of the upscale gambling scene, with its elegant costumes and set designs reflecting the opulence of the era.
While "Mister Cory" might not be as well-known as some other films from the 1950s, it's a solid drama that offers a glimpse into the aspirations and complexities of a young man seeking to redefine his identity and status in post-war America. The film remains an interesting piece in Tony Curtis's filmography and in the genre of drama focusing on the world of gambling and ambition.
About the artist:
Benny Stilling was a Danish poster designer whose career spans from the 1940s through the 1960s. He had an extremely recognizable style, strongly linked to advertising and reminiscent of vintage advertising of the period. Over the three decades of his production, his style became more personal and modern.
Stilling's posters are characterized by highly marked black outlines and solid graphic elements. Figures of the actors are clearly detached from the backgrounds of their posters. While his choice of pastel background colors, such as powder blues, light greens, and pinks, is also a particular feature in much of his work. The modernity of Stilling's style became most apparent in the 1960s.
