Artist's Description

A digital portrait of Marlene Dietrich (1901 – 1992) a German-American actress and singer. Her career spanned from the 1910s to the 1980s. In the late 1920s, she was popular as a leading lady and compared to Greta Garbo. Until American film director Josef von Sternberg discovered her, her success was confined to the German-speaking world.

Sternberg directed her in "The Blue Angel" (1930), which gave her international acclaim and led to a contract with Paramount Pictures. In Hollywood, von Sternberg transformed her from a plump fraulein into a glamorous, sensuous star and woman of mystery. Six of Dietrich's first seven Hollywood films were made by von Sternberg, all made von Sternberg an enigma to the public and Dietrich a legend and a myth.

The six movies Sternberg directed her in were "Morocco" (1930) (her only Academy Award nomination), "Dishonored" (1931), "Shanghai Express" and "Blonde Venus" (both 1932), "The Scarlet Empress" (1934) and "The Devil Is a Woman" (1935...
