The movie is a light-hearted and humorous story that revolves around the character of Maddalena Ciarrapico, played by Sophia Loren.
Maddalena is an Italian immigrant who has been living in the United States for several years. She works as a housekeeper in New York City and enjoys a modest but comfortable life. However, she decides to return to her hometown in Italy for a visit, bringing with her a large, specially prepared mortadella sausage, which is a type of Italian cold cut.
The plot unfolds as Maddalena attempts to bring the oversized mortadella through U.S. customs. However, her plan encounters various obstacles and comedic mishaps, including misunderstandings with customs officials and quirky encounters with other travelers.
