Description
Henry Fonda pop art portrait. Fonda (1905 – 1982) was an American film and stage actor whose career in Hollywood spanned five decades. Fonda projected a strong, appealing screen image in several films now considered classics, earning one Academy Award for Best Actor on two nominations.
Fonda was the father to actors Jane Fonda, son Peter Fonda, granddaughter Bridget Fonda, and grandson Troy Garity. He was named the sixth-Greatest Male Screen Legends of the Classic Hollywood Era.
A year after Fonda moved to Hollywood in the early 1930s, his rise in films was meteoric. He was an established star and, by the end of the decade, internationally famous and admired. He was noted for his engaging sincerity, natural style of delivery, and characteristically "American" personality, which proved ideal for the screen.
After an early start acting on Broadway, he made his screen debut in Hollywood in 1935. He received significant roles, such as opposite Bette Davis in "Jezebel" (1938), in "Jesse James" (1939), and the future President in "Young Mr. Lincoln" (1939). His first Oscar nomination came from his starring role in "The Grapes of Wrath" (1940). The film is among the greatest American films, which was based on John Steinbeck's novel of the same name.
