Description
Greta Garbo, born Greta Lovisa Gustafsson on September 18, 1905, in Stockholm, Sweden, was one of the most iconic actresses of the silent film and early talkie era. Renowned for her striking beauty, enigmatic presence, and intense performances, Garbo became a global sensation and a cinematic legend.
Garbo began her acting career in Sweden before catching the eye of Hollywood talent scouts. She was signed by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM) and made her American film debut in "The Torrent" (1926). However, it was her role in "Flesh and the Devil" (1927) opposite John Gilbert that propelled her to stardom. The chemistry between Garbo and Gilbert on-screen mirrored their off-screen romance, captivating audiences and solidifying Garbo's status as a leading lady.
Throughout the late 1920s and 1930s, Garbo starred in a series of acclaimed films, including "Anna Christie" (1930), "Grand Hotel" (1932), "Queen Christina" (1933), and "Anna Karenina" (1935). She was known for her deep, soulful performances, often portraying complex, enigmatic characters grappling with love, desire, and existential angst.
Garbo's magnetic screen presence and ability to convey emotion with subtlety and nuance earned her critical acclaim and a devoted fan following. She was nominated for three Academy Awards during her career but never won, although she did receive an honorary Academy Award in 1954 for her unforgettable performances.
In 1941, at the age of 36, Garbo retired from acting, leaving behind a legacy of timeless films and iconic performances. Despite her relatively brief career, she remains one of the most celebrated and influential actresses in the history of cinema, revered for her talent, beauty, and mystique. Garbo famously declared, "I want to be alone," and her desire for privacy and seclusion only added to her legendary status. Even decades after her retirement, she continues to captivate audiences and inspire admiration for her artistry and allure.

About the artist:
Sergio Gargiulo was an Italian painter and poster artist. In the 1930s he was commissioned by MGM to do publicity portraits of some of its leading stars.
Gargiulo's art has an extremely personal and recognizable style. The focus of the designer, in fact, falls precisely on faces: there is no setting or scenery; gazes and facial expressions are enough to connote the story. The focus of this artist is on portraits and the plot becomes secondary, preferring a simple and minimal graphic composition.
In this stylistic choice, Gargiulo favors clean, graphic lines and the use of iridescent and bright colors to create luminous effects on the face. The movie stars occupy the space entirely, carving out a space in fanciful spots, clouds, or squares. In some cases, Gargiulo chooses interesting monochrome shades of gray or shades of bronze, giving the characters the noble status of sculpture. Gargiulo's artworks are sculptural portraits.
