Description
A vintage Danish movie poster of ''From Here to Eternity'', a classic American film released in 1953, directed by Fred Zinnemann and based on James Jones' novel of the same name. The film is set in the months leading up to the attack on Pearl Harbor during World War II and is known for its portrayal of military life and personal relationships against the backdrop of impending war.
The film's plot primarily revolves around the lives of several U.S. Army soldiers stationed at the Schofield Barracks in Hawaii. The central characters include:
First Sergeant Milton Warden (played by Burt Lancaster): He is the tough and stoic non-commissioned officer in charge of G Company. Warden becomes romantically involved with the neglected wife of his commanding officer.
Private Robert E. Lee "Prew" Prewitt (played by Montgomery Clift): Prewitt is a talented bugler and a stubborn soldier who refuses to join the company boxing team due to past traumatic experiences. His determination leads to conflicts with his superiors.
Karen Holmes (played by Deborah Kerr): She is the lonely and unhappy wife of Captain Dana Holmes. Karen begins a passionate extramarital affair with Sergeant Warden, despite the risks and consequences.
Captain Dana "Dynamite" Holmes (played by Philip Ober): He is the commanding officer of G Company and is unaware of his wife's affair. He is a strict and unlikable character.
The film explores themes of love, loyalty, and the hardships faced by the soldiers and their loved ones, all set against the backdrop of impending war. It also sheds light on the rigid military culture and the pressures soldiers faced during this tumultuous period in American history.
One of the most iconic scenes in the film features Burt Lancaster and Deborah Kerr embracing passionately on the beach as waves crash over them, which has become an enduring image in cinema history.
"From Here to Eternity" was critically acclaimed and won eight Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director, and acting awards for Frank Sinatra and Donna Reed in supporting roles. The film is often remembered for its powerful performances, gripping storytelling, and its depiction of the complex emotions and relationships of the characters in the face of war. It remains a classic in the annals of American cinema and is considered a timeless portrayal of love and conflict in a wartime setting.
About the artist:
Benny Stilling was a Danish poster designer whose career spans from the 1940s through the 1960s. He had an extremely recognizable style, strongly linked to advertising and reminiscent of vintage advertising of the period. Over the three decades of his production, his style became more personal and modern.
Stilling's posters are characterized by highly marked black outlines and solid graphic elements. Figures of the actors are clearly detached from the backgrounds of their posters. While his choice of pastel background colors, such as powder blues, light greens, and pinks, is also a particular feature in much of his work. The modernity of Stilling's style became most apparent in the 1960s.
