Description
A vintage German movie poster of ''Conflict'', a 1945 American film noir directed by Curtis Bernhardt. This suspenseful thriller is known for its tense atmosphere and compelling plot. Here's a brief description of the film:
Plot:
"Conflict" stars Humphrey Bogart as Richard Mason, a successful and seemingly content engineer who is married to Kathryn (played by Rose Hobart). On the surface, their marriage appears to be stable, but in reality, Richard is deeply unhappy and has been having an affair with his wife's younger sister, Evelyn Turner (played by Alexis Smith).
The film takes a dark turn when Richard decides that he wants to get rid of his wife to be with Evelyn permanently. He hatches a plan to murder Kathryn, but his carefully devised scheme goes awry when a mysterious stranger named Dr. Mark Hamilton (played by Sydney Greenstreet) enters the picture.
As Richard's plan unravels and the tension escalates, the film becomes a gripping psychological thriller. Richard must navigate a web of lies and deception while trying to outmaneuver Dr. Hamilton, who begins to suspect foul play.
"Conflict" is known for its tight and suspenseful narrative, as well as the strong performances of its cast, particularly Humphrey Bogart and Sydney Greenstreet. The film is a classic example of film noir, characterized by its shadowy cinematography, morally ambiguous characters, and a sense of impending doom.
While "Conflict" may not be as famous as some of Humphrey Bogart's other film noir classics like "The Maltese Falcon" or "Casablanca," it remains a solid entry in the genre and is appreciated for its tense and atmospheric storytelling. The film explores themes of betrayal, obsession, and the consequences of one's actions, making it a compelling addition to the film noir canon.
About the artist:
Heinz Schulz-Neudamm (1899–1969) was a German graphic designer and illustrator, best known for designing film posters. He designed one of the world’s most valuable posters for the film "Metropolis" (1927).
As a staff designer for motion picture publicity at Universum-Film Aktiengesellschaft (UFA,) he earned notoriety among the many German poster designers who created memorable graphics from the 1920s through the 1950s.
Schulz-Neudamm's style is unmistakable and popular, due to the fame of some of his movie posters, first and foremost the avant-garde Fritz Lang's "Metropolis." His portraits are realistic and, at the same time graphic novel-like, thanks to the unnatural but intense use of colors. He does not use a methodical modulation of tones or chiaroscuro: the colors are plain, defined, without smudging. The effect is precise, the balance between flashy titles and elegant scenes is impeccable.
Even the famous poster of "Metropolis," a veritable tribute to New York, is a lithograph that expresses a look towards the future. The great buildings of the city shine with a luminous and electric tension, reminiscent of the energetic cities represented by the Futurists and of the exasperated forms of German Expressionism.
