It is a lighthearted Western musical that stars Doris Day in the titular role of Calamity Jane, a legendary figure from the American Old West. The film is set in the rough-and-tumble town of Deadwood, South Dakota, during the 1870s.
The story follows the adventures of Calamity Jane, a brash and tomboyish frontierswoman known for her sharpshooting skills and fearless demeanor. She is the proprietor of the Golden Garter saloon and is often involved in various escapades and conflicts in the Wild West. One of her biggest rivals is Wild Bill Hickok, portrayed by Howard Keel, who is also a charismatic and renowned gunslinger in Deadwood.
