The film stars Robert Mitchum as Jim Garry, a drifter who becomes embroiled in a complex conflict between two rival cattle ranchers in the American West. On one side, there's Tate Riling (played by Robert Preston), a ruthless and unscrupulous rancher who aims to take control of the entire valley by any means necessary. On the other side is Kris Barden (played by Tom Tully), a more morally upright rancher who seeks to protect his land and livelihood.
Jim Garry initially finds himself working for Riling but soon becomes disillusioned by his employer's unethical practices. Garry decides to switch sides and join forces with Barden, setting the stage for a tense showdown between the rival factions.
