Artist's Description

In 1932 the silver screen served as an escape for the weary hearts of America. Enter "Cabin in the Cotton," a production that brought together two of Hollywood's most iconic stars: Bette Davis and Richard Barthelmess.

Richard Barthelmess, already a household name by the time the '30s rolled around, played Marvin Blake - a young man torn between the working-class struggles of the sharecroppers and the aristocratic world of the landowners. Barthelmess, with his chiseled features and magnetic presence, brought a tangible authenticity to the role. A blend of sincerity and determination, his portrayal of Marvin personified the American dream, the aspiration to rise above one's birthright, and to fight for what's right.

Then there was Bette Davis. With her trademark eyes that seemed to pierce the very soul of the audience, she played Madge, the seductive and willful daughter of the plantation owner. It was in this film that Davis delivered one of her most iconic lines, "I'd lik...
