The story of "Bananas" follows Fielding Mellish, played by Woody Allen, a nebbish product tester who becomes inadvertently involved in a revolution in a fictional Latin American country. After his break-up with a social activist named Nancy, played by Louise Lasser, Fielding impulsively travels to the fictional San Marcos to impress Nancy and finds himself caught up in the country's political turmoil. He becomes an accidental revolutionary leader and finds himself at the center of a comically absurd revolution.
