Description
A vintage French movie poster of ''Alexandre le Bienheureux'', a French comedy film released in 1968, directed by Yves Robert, who also co-wrote the screenplay with Marcel Jullian. The film is also known as "Very Happy Alexander" in English. It stars Philippe Noiret in the titular role of Alexandre and features a cast that includes Marlène Jobert, Françoise Brion, and Tsilla Chelton.
The story revolves around Alexandre, a frustrated and overworked farmer who lives in a rural French village. He is married to a demanding and domineering wife, Edwige (played by Françoise Brion), who constantly nags him and expects him to toil on the farm day in and day out. Alexandre's life is a never-ending cycle of hard work, and he dreams of escaping from his oppressive routine.
One day, Alexandre decides he's had enough of his miserable life and feigns illness to escape from his responsibilities. He pretends to be bedridden and enjoys the newfound freedom as his wife and the villagers believe he is seriously ill. While lying in his comfortable bed, Alexandre explores the pleasures of idleness and begins to discover the simple joys of life that he had been missing. He finds solace in the beauty of nature, enjoys the company of his dog, and even starts a romantic relationship with a local widow named Agathe (played by Marlène Jobert).
As Alexandre's fake illness continues, he becomes more adept at living a carefree life, indulging in his passions and hobbies, and spending time with his new love interest. Meanwhile, his wife and the villagers become increasingly worried about his deteriorating health. The film humorously explores the consequences of Alexandre's decision to embrace leisure and the impact it has on the people around him.
"Alexandre le Bienheureux" is a lighthearted and charming comedy that portrays the desire for a simpler, more relaxed way of life. It offers a satirical commentary on the expectations and pressures of modern society while celebrating the joys of escaping from them. Philippe Noiret delivers a memorable performance as Alexandre, and the film's picturesque rural setting adds to its overall charm. It remains a beloved classic of French cinema.
