Description
A vintage movie poster from Argentina of ''The Drum'', a British adventure film released in 1938, directed by Zoltan Korda. The movie is set in British-controlled India during the late 19th century, against the backdrop of political unrest and the struggle for independence from British colonial rule. The film is also known as "Drums" in the United States.
The story revolves around a young Prince Azim (played by Sabu), who becomes an orphan after his father, the ruler of a small state, is killed by British forces. Azim is taken under the protection of an Englishman named Captain Carruthers (played by Roger Livesey), who raises him as a British ward. However, as Azim grows older, he becomes increasingly aware of the oppressive nature of British rule and the injustices suffered by his people.
As tensions rise and anti-British sentiment grows, Azim decides to lead a rebellion against the British authorities. He becomes a symbol of resistance, and the film follows his journey as he seeks to unite his people and gain their independence.
"The Drum" is notable for its use of Technicolor and its exotic Indian setting, as well as for the performance of Sabu, a young Indian actor who became an international sensation for his role in the film. The movie combines elements of adventure, drama, and political intrigue, and it reflects the colonial-era themes and tensions of its time.
Overall, "The Drum" is a historically significant film that captures the atmosphere of British colonial India and explores themes of colonialism, identity, and resistance. It remains an important work in the history of British cinema and is remembered for its striking visuals and compelling storytelling.
About the artist:
Osvaldo Mario Venturi (1900-1989, Buenos Aires,) was a popular painter, watercolorist and movie poster designer from Argentina.
Venturi graduated from the National Academy of Fine Arts in 1923. He went on to design posters for numerous films directed by Lucas Demare and Mario Soffic, among others. By the 1940s, he had become a leading designer of movie posters.
His design style centered around realism, relying on intense colors and strong brush strokes. He typically depicted stars as emotionally expressive, especially in his portraits for foreign melodrama films, a popular genre among Argentinean audiences.
Venturi’s movie posters are characterized by a vivid chromatic palette and structured through the overlapping of veils: they seem bright watercolors. The representation of the protagonists' faces makes them unique. Venturi depicts their heads almost floating in a space rich of details, like in an intricate dream. His portraits are loud caricatures; they load emotions, gestures, attitudes, and almost exaggerated expressions. Influenced by the popular Argentinian genre of melodrama and its strong emotional power, a poster from Venturi is never cold or detached.
