Description
In 1990, esteemed director Sidney Lumet gave us a tale rich with the grit and grime of New York City's criminal underbelly. The film? "Q&A."
The setting is New York's steamy streets and dim-lit precincts. A young, idealistic assistant DA named Al Reilly (played by Timothy Hutton) is handed a seemingly open-and-shut case: a shooting involving a veteran detective, Mike Brennan (Nick Nolte), a man who claims self-defense. But as is often the case in stories like these, there's more than meets the eye.
Reilly starts digging, and layers upon layers of corruption, prejudice, and internal politics begin to unravel. Lumet, no stranger to exploring the dark corners of justice, with classics like "12 Angry Men" and "Serpico" under his belt, pushes us headfirst into a moral maelstrom. Our protagonist, Reilly, navigates a world where lines blur, and heroes and villains might just wear the same badge.
Bobby Texador, a Puerto Rican crime lord portrayed with flair by Armand Assante, becomes a key piece in this puzzle, bringing with him the vibrant and dangerous rhythms of New York's Latino neighborhoods. The narrative beautifully weaves racism, betrayal, and personal redemption, making us question our perceptions of right and wrong.
But what makes "Q&A" so captivating isn't just its suspenseful plot, but Lumet's unparalleled ability to pull raw and genuine performances out of his cast. The city becomes a character of its own, with the neon lights, jazz bars, and the very pulse of the streets reflecting the inner turmoil of its characters.
