Description
A vintage German movie poster of ''One-Eyed Jacks'', a Western film released in 1961. It is notable for being the only film directed by iconic actor Marlon Brando. The movie is based on Charles Neider's novel "The Authentic Death of Hendry Jones" and features a screenplay written by Guy Trosper.
The film is set in the American West during the 1880s and follows the story of two outlaws, Rio (played by Marlon Brando) and Dad Longworth (played by Karl Malden). Rio and Dad are partners in crime, robbing banks and engaging in various criminal activities together. However, their partnership takes a dramatic turn when they rob a bank and Rio is captured by the authorities, while Dad manages to escape with the stolen loot.
Rio is subsequently imprisoned for five years, and during his time behind bars, he nurtures a burning desire for revenge against Dad, who not only abandoned him during the heist but also took Rio's share of the stolen money and used it to build a prosperous life. After his release, Rio embarks on a quest to track down Dad and exact his vengeance.
As Rio's pursuit of Dad leads him to a small seaside town in California, he becomes entangled with a local woman named Louisa (played by Pina Pellicer) and her foster mother, MarÃa (played by Katy Jurado). Rio's initial mission to avenge himself against Dad becomes complicated as he becomes emotionally attached to Louisa and forms a complicated relationship with MarÃa.
"One-Eyed Jacks" is known for its complex character dynamics, particularly the strained relationship between Rio and Dad, as well as its exploration of themes such as betrayal, redemption, and the blurred lines between good and bad. Marlon Brando's direction and performance in the film received praise for its depth and complexity.
The movie's production was tumultuous, with Brando taking over the directorial reins from Stanley Kubrick, who was originally attached to the project. Despite its behind-the-scenes challenges, "One-Eyed Jacks" remains a notable entry in the Western genre, offering a unique and character-driven take on the traditional cowboy narrative.
About the artist:
Rolf Goetze was a German illustrator and painter who painted film poster art for about 30 years. His early works began in the 1930s, when he did a number of posters for Greta Garbo films, including "Queen Christina" (1934), "Anna Karenina" (1935), and "Camille" (1936). He continued creating German poster artwork of mostly American films through the 1960s.
From a stylistic point of view, Goetze's posters are characterized by a great compositional structure; the German designer was capable of blending incredibly realistic, close-up portraits, with elaborate scenes in the background. An undisputed master of portraiture, Goetze created numerous posters using monochrome, black and white, or sepia palettes. His posters look like realistic, vivid charcoal drawings. They are able to represent faces and expressions of their protagonists, as mirrors faithful to reality.
