A vintage French movie poster of ''Mask of the Avenger'', a 1951 American historical adventure film directed by Phil Karlson and starring John Derek in the lead role. The movie is set in Italy during the early 19th century and is known for its combination of swashbuckling action and romantic elements. Here's a brief description of the film:
Plot:
The story of "Mask of the Avenger" revolves around a character named Andrea Orsini, played by John Derek. Orsini is an Italian freedom fighter who seeks to avenge the death of his father, who was unjustly executed during the Napoleonic era. To hide his true identity and protect himself from the authorities, Orsini assumes the guise of a masked avenger, known as the "Mask of the Avenger."
As the masked avenger, Orsini becomes a legendary figure, fighting for justice and against the oppressive French regime. Along the way, he falls in love with a beautiful woman, played by Jody Lawrance, who becomes entangled in his quest for vengeance.
The film is a mix of action, romance, and intrigue as Orsini battles his enemies while keeping his true identity hidden behind the mask. The character of the masked avenger is a classic archetype of the swashbuckling hero, and the film showcases John Derek's charisma and athletic abilities in the role.
"Mask of the Avenger" combines elements of adventure, historical drama, and romance, making it an entertaining and engaging film for fans of classic Hollywood cinema. It captures the spirit of heroism and justice in a historical setting, making it a memorable entry in John Derek's filmography and a notable example of the adventure genre from the 1950s.
About the poster artist:
Jacques Bonneaud (March 13, 1898–August 14, 1971) was a French lithographer and poster designer. In 1916, he enrolled in the National School of Fine Arts in Paris. During his 35-year career as an artist, he produced nearly 2,000 film posters using lithography printing. One of his most famous posters is for "Les Enfants du Paradis "(1945). After 1958, he gave up poster design to become the artistic director of a printing house.
Bonneaud's posters are striking for their colors and compositional structure. The subjects are often placed on unexpected and surprising lines: they are arranged on diagonals, asymmetrical lines, dynamic directions. Some faces stand out in the foreground, other characters move with dynamic actions in the background.
His portraits are realistic but at the same time essential, graphically uniform, with defined lines. They are very recognizable actors and actresses, but never painted in a veristic way. Bonneaud's artworks highlight the protagonists also through the use of colors: bright, unnatural, while watching them, it seems to be in front of a Fauvist painting.
