Description
A vintage German movie poster of ''Love on a Pillow'', a French drama film released in 1962. Directed by Roger Vadim, the movie is known as "Le Repos du guerrier" in French, which translates to "The Warrior's Rest." The film stars Brigitte Bardot and Robert Hossein in the lead roles.
The story revolves around the character of Geneviève Le Theil (played by Brigitte Bardot), a young and naive woman who stumbles upon a man named Renaud Sarti (played by Robert Hossein) in a Parisian park. Renaud is a troubled and wounded man who has attempted suicide. Geneviève saves him and becomes infatuated with him, eventually falling in love. She decides to take him into her home, providing him with care and comfort.
As Geneviève becomes more involved in Renaud's life, she discovers that he is a deeply troubled and cynical man, struggling with his own inner demons and disillusionment with society. Despite his initial reluctance, Renaud begins to reciprocate Geneviève's affection, and a complicated and passionate love affair ensues.
"Love on a Pillow" explores themes of love, desire, and the complexities of human relationships. The film delves into the contrast between Geneviève's innocence and Renaud's world-weariness, creating a tension that drives the narrative forward.
Brigitte Bardot's performance in the film is often praised for its depth and vulnerability, and the movie is considered one of her notable works. "Love on a Pillow" is part of the cinematic wave of French New Wave and was significant in its exploration of unconventional relationships and societal norms.
The film's title, "Love on a Pillow," suggests the comfort and security that Geneviève provides to Renaud, but it also hints at the fragility of their relationship and the challenges they face. Overall, "Love on a Pillow" is a thought-provoking and emotionally charged drama that showcases the talents of its lead actors and the director's exploration of complex human emotions.
About the artist:
Hans Braun (1925—2011) was a German illustrator who painted art for film posters from the early 1940s to the early 1970s.
The sensuality of the human figures he portrayed is extremely physical. The charm of these movie stars passes through the artist’s talent, able to make their bodies defined and almost sculptural. The tones and colors are strong: intense reds, blacks, and purples. Even the rendering of faces and expressions makes them idealized but at the same time beauties in flesh and blood.
Braun delineates the figures with marked black outlines, embossing them on neutral and chromatic backgrounds as if they were sculptures. In this way, the protagonists stand out on the scene, impossible to look away from them.
