Description
A vintage movie poster of ''Keeper of the Flame'', a 1943 American drama film directed by George Cukor and produced by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM). The film stars Spencer Tracy and Katharine Hepburn, who were a popular on-screen couple during that era. It marked their second collaboration after "Woman of the Year" (1942).
The story of "Keeper of the Flame" revolves around a famous and revered American war hero named Robert Forrest. Forrest dies in a car accident, and journalist Stephen O'Malley, played by Spencer Tracy, is assigned to cover his funeral and write a biography about the late hero. However, as O'Malley delves deeper into Forrest's life and investigates the circumstances of his death, he begins to uncover dark secrets about the man and his family.
Katharine Hepburn plays Christine Forrest, the widow of the war hero. As O'Malley continues his investigation, he becomes increasingly suspicious of the circumstances surrounding Forrest's death and the hidden truths about his life. The film explores themes of hero worship, the price of maintaining public images, and the consequences of keeping family secrets.
"Keeper of the Flame" is notable for its serious and somber tone, as it deals with themes of patriotism, heroism, and the darker aspects of American society. It was released during World War II, and its exploration of the complexities of heroism and the manipulation of public perception resonated with the wartime audience.
While not as well-remembered today as some of Tracy and Hepburn's other collaborations, "Keeper of the Flame" is a thought-provoking film that offers a glimpse into the issues and concerns of its time. The performances of Tracy and Hepburn are notable, as always, and the film is remembered for its exploration of the darker side of heroism and the consequences of blind adulation.
