Description
A vintage French movie poster of "Dance of the Vampires," also known as "The Fearless Vampire Killers" in the United States, is a 1967 horror-comedy film directed by Roman Polanski. The film is notable for blending elements of horror and comedy, offering a unique and often humorous take on the vampire genre.
The story is set in a remote Transylvanian village and follows the adventures of Professor Abronsius (played by Jack MacGowran), an eccentric and bumbling vampire hunter, and his loyal but somewhat dim-witted assistant, Alfred (played by Roman Polanski). The duo arrives in the village to investigate reports of vampire activity, and their journey leads them to a creepy, snow-covered castle inhabited by the enigmatic and seductive Count von Krolock (played by Ferdy Mayne).
As the story unfolds, Professor Abronsius and Alfred become embroiled in a series of comic and eerie encounters with the local villagers and the vampire inhabitants of the castle. The film balances moments of tension and horror with slapstick comedy, resulting in a unique and somewhat surreal atmosphere.
"Dance of the Vampires" is known for its blend of Gothic horror and dark humor, and it has gained a cult following over the years. The film's production design and cinematography create a visually striking and atmospheric world, while the performances, especially that of Roman Polanski, contribute to the film's comedic charm.
While not a traditional horror film, "Dance of the Vampires" is considered a classic in its own right, offering a quirky and memorable take on the vampire mythos. It remains a notable entry in the career of director Roman Polanski and has influenced later works that combine horror and comedy in a similar fashion.
About the poster artist:
Clement Hurel was born in Lorraine, France on March 14, 1927, and died February 12, 2008 in Paris. He was one of France's most important poster artists during the second half of the twentieth century, producing over 1,500 posters.
Starting early in his career, he worked regularly with film companies such as Gaumont, RKO, Société Nouvelle de Cinématographie and Hammer Film Productions. In Paris, he was awarded the Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres for contributing to the enrichment of the French cultural inheritance.
Hurel’s poster style is amazingly recognizable. Heavily influenced by his career in the advertising industry, Hurel creates posters with few but very striking characters in the foreground. In addition, he often plays with the playful sensuality of female figures typically inspired by the 1950s pin-up genre.
The style is never realistic but rather caricatured, lighthearted, and humorous. From the point of view of colors, Hurel plays a lot on light tones, often juxtaposing black and white with cleverly colored elements. His figures even seem to be sketched as if they were pencil drawings or watercolors. Light and impalpable.
