Description
Illustration of Charles Bronson (1920-2003), an American actor often playing in roles as police officers, gunfighters, or vigilantes, giving his films a consistent dramatic quality.
One of fifteen children of a Lithuanian coal miner, he was the only one to finish high school, but at age 16, he went to work in the coal mines, as did all his brothers. After WW II action as a tail gunner aboard a B-29 bomber, he went to Philadelphia to study art and joined an acting company as a set designer and bit player.
In 1949 he enrolled at the Pasadena Playhouse school and soon played supporting roles in Hollywood films and TV productions. Craggy-faced and toughly built, he was tagged from the start for brawny character parts and often played parts as a punk, ethnic roughneck, or demented villain. But gradually, his unique facial features and powerful physique helped him secure lead roles.
In 1968, he left Hollywood for Europe, where almost overnight, he became a major box-office star in Paris, Rome, and Madrid. European audiences adored his toughness and animal magnetism. He became known in France as "le Sacre Monstre" and in Italy as "Il Brutto. "
At age of 50, he was considered a sex symbol and one of the highest-paid international cinema stars. In 1971 he received a Golden Globe Award as the world's most popular actor. The following year he returned to the US to capitalize on his newly won status and has since starred in several Hollywood action features, most successfully in "Death Wish" (1974) and its sequels. Bronson's second wife (1968-90) was the late Jill Ireland, who appeared with him in no fewer than 15 films. He was the father of seven children.
