Description
A vintage Dutch movie poster of ''Arch of Triumph'', a 1948 American drama film directed by Lewis Milestone and based on the novel of the same name by Erich Maria Remarque. The film is set in Paris in the late 1930s, just before the outbreak of World War II, and it revolves around the lives of a group of expatriates living in the city.
The story primarily focuses on the character of Dr. Ravic, played by Charles Boyer, a German refugee and a skilled surgeon who has fled Nazi Germany. Ravic is living in Paris without legal documentation and works underground to help other refugees and political dissidents. While struggling to maintain his anonymity, he meets Joan Madou, played by Ingrid Bergman, a beautiful and mysterious woman who becomes his love interest.
As the plot unfolds, Ravic and Joan become deeply involved in a passionate but doomed love affair, set against the backdrop of impending war and the uncertain fate of the refugees in Paris. The film explores themes of love, loss, sacrifice, and the resilience of the human spirit in the face of adversity.
"Arch of Triumph" is known for its atmospheric and romantic portrayal of Paris and its compelling performances by Charles Boyer and Ingrid Bergman. The film also features a strong supporting cast, including Charles Laughton and Louis Calhern. It captures the mood and tensions of the pre-war period in Europe, where the threat of war hangs heavily over the characters' lives.
While "Arch of Triumph" may not be as well-known as some of the other films starring Ingrid Bergman and Charles Boyer, it remains a notable entry in their filmographies and is remembered for its portrayal of love and courage in a time of great uncertainty and danger.
